Burkhan Bakshin Altan Sume (Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni)

The largest Buddhist temple in Europe (and Russia), opened December 2005 in central Elista. Symbol of the Kalmyk Buddhist revival; houses a large Buddha statue, museum of Buddhist culture/history, library, and extensive grounds with stupas, prayer wheels, and statues. Blessed by the Dalai Lama. Address often listed near Pushkina Street.

Geden Sheddup Choikorling (Sakyusn Sume / Syakusn-Sume)

Also called the 'Old Hurul' or Sakyusn Sume. The first major modern Buddhist temple opened in Elista (1996) after the post-Soviet revival. Marked the beginning of widespread khurul construction across Kalmykia. Significant for re-establishing monastic traditions under Telo Tulku Rinpoche.

Khosheutovsky Khurul (Temple of Victory)

Historic Khosheutovsky Khurul (also called Temple of Victory). Built 1814–1818 by Prince Serebdzhab Tyumen to commemorate the Napoleonic Wars victory; the only pre-Soviet Kalmyk temple that partially survived 1930s purges. Located in Astrakhan Oblast near the Volga. Important symbol of Kalmyk resilience.

Major modern monastery complex in Lagan (Lagansky District, near the Caspian Sea). Features one of Europe's largest sitting Buddha statues (12.5 meters tall, ~30 tons, consecrated ~2019). Site consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama in 1992; original khurul opened 1995, new building 2017. Important center for the southeastern Kalmyk Buddhist community.

Pagoda of Seven Days (Pagoda 'Seven Days')

Iconic seven-tiered red Buddhist pagoda in the central square of Elista (Lenin Square / Pushkin Boulevard intersection). Not a full monastery but a major sacred landmark and symbol of the Buddhist revival. Contains a large rotating prayer drum believed to purify karma and grant wishes (ritual: spin clockwise three times with donation). Striking architectural contrast to Soviet-era surroundings; popular local and tourist site.
