September 5th is the official Day of the Kalmyk Language and National Writing in the Republic of Kalmykia. The date is fixed in regional law and honors both the living Kalmyk language and Todo Bichig ("Clear Script"), the Oirat writing system created in 1648 by the Buddhist monk and scholar Zaya Pandita Namkhai Gyatso.

Todo Bichig was designed to bring written Oirat closer to speech and to record Buddhist, legal, and literary texts. The script is still used among Oirat communities outside Russia and is taught again in Elista through library and khurul courses.
