The caption says Fedor Ivanovich Kalmyck, or Kalmyk, lived from 1765 to 1832, was taken to St. Petersburg as a child around 1770, baptized, and later sent by Catherine the Great to Caroline of Zweibrucken in Germany, where he worked as a painter and engraver.
