Mingiyan (also Mingyan or Mingγiyan) is one of the most charismatic and formidable warriors among Jangar Khan's inner circle of twelve chief bogatyrs in the Kalmyk Epic of Jangar.[1] Known by epithets such as "Mingiyan the Black Stallion Rider" or "Mingiyan of the Thunderous Voice," he personifies overwhelming physical power, volcanic temper, and absolute, almost reckless bravery, making him the epic's embodiment of raw, unstoppable force.
In the cycle's cosmology, Mingiyan is depicted as a giant of a man with coal-black hair, a booming voice that can shatter mountains, and superhuman strength capable of uprooting ancient trees or wrestling entire enemy squadrons single-handedly. His inseparable companion is a massive black stallion said to be faster than the wind and capable of covering a thousand li in a single leap.[2] This horse, often called Kökö Mor' (Blue-Black Steed), functions almost as an extension of Mingiyan's own fury in battle.
Several cantos centre on Mingiyan's exploits. In the celebrated chapter "Mingiyan's Fight against the Seventy-Three Manggus," he charges alone into a demonic horde, swinging a club forged from an entire ironwood tree and slaying seventy-three monsters in a single rampage before rescuing Jangar's kidnapped bride.[3] Another famous episode, "How Mingiyan Tore Down the Iron Mountain," describes him physically ripping apart a mountain fortress that blocked Bumba's army, clearing the path with his bare hands when conventional weapons failed.
Mingiyan's character serves important narrative and symbolic functions. While heroes like Altan Tseedga represent precision and Sanal cunning, Mingiyan is the personification of brute strength and unbridled aggression-yet always directed in selfless service to Jangar and Bumba. His frequent outbursts of rage, followed by remorse and renewed oaths of loyalty during palace banquets, add dramatic tension and emotional depth to the cycle.[4] His archetype reflects historical Oirat ideals of the berserker-style shock warrior essential in steppe cavalry charges.
